Living With A Spouse Who Has Chronic Pain

Save your marriage

Living with a spouse who suffers from chronic pain can be very hard on the relationship.  Your spouse’s condition can start to take its toll on you both emotionally and physically.  Here are a few tips for dealing with the situation.

Your spouse likely won’t be able to do many chores around the home because of his or her condition.  It’s common to start to resent having to do all the work.  It can be a good idea to hire a housekeeper to help out around the house.  Coming by once or twice a week could certainly help out a lot.

When you’re living in this situation for an extended period of time, then you’ll probably develop some strong emotions about it.  You should keep in mind that you aren’t the only one that will have emotions.  You and your partner need to communicate constantly to keep a check on each other’s feelings.

Living in chronic pain, your partner will need all the support they can get.  You’re supposed to stay through thick and thin, no matter how bad it gets.  Don’t forget that you took a vow on your wedding day.

Your spouse likely developed his or her current condition after you got married.  It’s always vital that you keep in mind the things that brought you together in the first place.  You’ll be able to make it through more difficult times if you do.

You may have to spend all your time taking care of the kids and your spouse.  However, you shouldn’t neglect yourself in the process.  You should try to make time to spend alone with yourself.

It’s also in your best interests to keep your current friends in your life.  It can be hard finding time to spend with in light of everything that’s going on.  You can lean on your friends when things get too stressful.

There are also groups dedicated to helping people in your situation.  You’ll have plenty of support since the members are going through your situation and can relate.

There are few better ways to deal with your situation than joining one of these groups.  However, one good option is talking to a marriage counselor.  These experts usually have the skills to fix any marital problem.  If you have lots of problems in your marriage, then you definitely need to seek help from one.
